Behind the Work at Border Cutz: Our Full Process
See how Border Cutz handles every cut from first call to finished fade. Real steps, real timing, and what to expect when you book with us.

At Border Cutz, our process runs from the first phone call to the final mirror check in about 45 to 60 minutes per client. We confirm the booking, run a short consult about hair type and lifestyle, cut and fade to spec, then finish with a hot towel and styling. Every visit follows the same eight checkpoints.
What happens when you first call Border Cutz?
The first call sets the tone. We ask three things: what cut you want, when you want it, and whether you've been in before. That's it. If you're new, we block an extra ten minutes so the consult isn't rushed.
Founded in 2019 on a walk-in model, we shifted to appointment-first in 2022 after we noticed something odd. Walk-ins were waiting 40+ minutes on Saturdays while Tuesday chairs sat empty. Booking fixed that. A standard men's cut runs $35, a skin fade $45, and beard work adds $15. Prices haven't moved in two years and we're upfront about that on the call.
Most shops ask what style you want. We ask what your morning looks like. A 6am construction shift and a 9am desk job need different cuts, even if the client asked for the same fade. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, barbering employment is projected to grow 7% through 2032 [1], and the shops winning that growth are the ones treating consultation as real work, not small talk.
How do we run the actual consult and cut?
Here's the sequence we follow every single time:
1. We wash and towel-dry so we can see your natural growth pattern before touching clippers.
2. We photograph the current cut from three angles if you're a returning client, so we can match or evolve it.
3. We agree on guard numbers out loud before the first pass, and we repeat them back.
4. We start with the heaviest guard and work down, checking symmetry every two minutes.
5. We hand you a mirror at the halfway mark, not just the end, so changes are still possible.
6. We finish with a straight-razor neck line and hot towel.
7. We style with a product matched to your hair type and send you home with the name written down.
That mid-cut mirror check is the step most shops skip. It's also the step that eliminates 90% of "I wish I'd asked for shorter" regret.
What should you expect on price and timing?
We price by complexity, not by clock. A quick cleanup on a client we've seen monthly for two years takes 25 minutes. A first-time skin fade with a beard shape-up takes a full hour. Both are fair. Neither is padded.
| Service | Price | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard cut | $35 | 30 min | Regulars, simple styles |
| Skin fade | $45 | 45 min | Tight fades, hard parts |
| Cut + beard | $50 | 60 min | Full grooming reset |
| Kids (under 12) | $25 | 25 min | First cuts, school prep |

Why do we finish every cut the same way?
Consistency. A client shouldn't have to remember which chair gave them the good fade last time. Every barber at Border Cutz finishes with the same four moves: line-up, neck shave, hot towel, style. Same order. Same standard.
Last November, a client named Marcus came in for his wedding cut. He'd booked three weeks out, sat with our senior barber for a 90-minute session, and left with photos his fiancée later said were the best he'd looked in ten years. He was 38. He'd been cutting his own hair since 2020. That's the kind of trust the finishing routine builds, one predictable visit at a time. Proper sanitation between clients matters too, and we follow the barbicide protocols recommended by state cosmetology boards [2].
Try this on your next visit anywhere: ask the barber to name their finishing steps before they start. If they can't list them, they don't have a process. They have a habit.
FAQ
How far in advance should I book?
For weekday cuts, 24 to 48 hours is usually enough. Saturdays fill up 7 to 10 days out, especially between 9am and noon. If you need a specific barber, book two weeks ahead. Walk-ins are welcome Tuesday through Thursday but we can't guarantee a chair.
Do you cut all hair types?
Yes. Our team trains across straight, wavy, coily, and textured hair, and we stock clippers and products for each. If you have a specific texture concern, mention it on the booking call so we pair you with the right barber from the start.
What if I don't like the cut?
Tell us before you leave the chair. We'll adjust on the spot at no charge. If you get home and something's off within 48 hours, come back and we'll fix it free. That's been our policy since day one.
Can I bring a reference photo?
Please do. Photos cut consultation time in half and reduce misreads. Bring two or three angles if possible, and be honest about whether your hair will actually hold that style. We'll tell you if it won't.
